Route 11 Yard Crawl
Saturday, 7 am–3 pm
THIRD ANNUAL ROUTE 11 YARD CRAWL SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 2007
7:00 A.M. TO 3:00 P.M.
SHENANDOAH COUNTY
STRASBURG, VIRGINIA TO NEW MARKET, VIRGINIA
A phenomenon has sprung up along the “Old Valley Pike” (Route 11) – 32 miles of yard sales! This year marks the third year of a wildly successful project that was born when five individual small chambers of commerce came together with an idea of the project that would span the entire length of Shenandoah County!
Route 11, also known as the Old Valley Pike, is the oldest hard surfaced road in the nation. Back in the 1830’s, a Scottish engineer by the name of MacAdam came up with a process to hard surface a road using tar and gravelit revolutionized transportation in the Valley – hence the term “Macadamized Road”.
The wonderful small towns along the “old Valley Pike’ are like a string of pearls. These towns are about five to six miles apart, and years ago they became established as centers of commerce, accessible by horse and buggy. Today your horses are under the hood of your car, but you can still enjoy the historical and unique flavor of each small town as you begin your yard sale adventure!
The northern most town in Shenandoah County is Strasburg (just south of where I-66 connects with I-81). Individuals, Churches and civic organizations all join in the fun. It’s that great time of year when everyone in Shenandoah County can clean out their closets and garages.
Residents with property all along the Old Valley Pike bring out their stuff, so you will want to start early to get through each town: Strasburg, Toms Brook, Maurertown, Woodstock, Edinburg, Mount Jackson and New Market – and all points in between.
Friday and Saturday night (August 10 and 11) the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival at Orkney Springs has some exciting music planned. Their Friday night concert will feature Arlo Guthrie, who has been an icon of American folk music for the last four decades. A song he performed, “Alice’s Restaurant” made him famous. That tune was followed by “The City of New Orleans” and others. With a mixture of great music and great storytelling, Guthrie sells out houses all over America.
On the evening of August 11th at 8:00 p.m. The Blind Boys of Alabama will appear on the Music Festival stage. These four-time Grammy Award winners were formed six and a half decades ago, and are the Iron Men of the music industry. They predate Elvis, Little Richard, and Al Green. Yet, even in their 70’s, they are still at the top of the gospel charts. The Blind Boys have proven themselves masters of bringing out the most spiritual aspects of mainstream music, while at the same time bringing music of the church straight to the roadhouse.
A weekend getaway would be perfect. Stay at one of our great hotels, bed and breakfasts or campgrounds. You can enjoy music under the stars at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival in Orkney Springs, and shop, shop, shop with the Yard Crawl along the Old Valley Pike! You’ll want to be sure and purchase one of the great “Yard Crawl” t-shirts as a souvenir and reminder of the great time you had in scenic Shenandoah County. You will find many reasons to come back again and again for fun in the Valley!
