Southern hospitality awaits you as you drive the I-581 corridor into Roanoke. Roanoke’s downtown area has an eclectic mix of shops, as well as the state’s oldest continuously operating open-air market, the historic Roanoke City Market. Vendors are always selling their wares, but during cold-weather months, Saturdays are your best bet to pick up a unique knick-knack. And you won’t want to miss the holiday activities at the market. The first three Fridays of December, the market is bustling with Dickens of a Christmas activities.
The world-class Mill Mountain Theatre, also downtown, has been bringing comedies, dramas, holiday shows, children’s shows, family musicals, and education productions to Virginia for over 40 years. While in town, be sure to take in a performance.
You’ll also want to take a walk back in time on the O. Winston Link Railwalk, which runs along Roanoke’s River of Steel, just outside the front door of the historic Hotel Roanoke. The Railwalk is a series of sidewalks, interpretive panels, and actual railroad artifacts. Start by touring the O. Winston Link Museum, located in the former Norfolk & Western Railway Passenger Station, also home to the Roanoke Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Next, continue down Norfolk Ave. to the Virginia Museum of Transportation, housed in the N&W Freight Station. This museum is home to Virginia’s most extensive collection of locomotives.
See the star atop Mill Mountain? The Merchants’ Association sponsored the construction of the star back in 1949 to promote a festive holiday shopping season in Roanoke. The star has been shining ever since! Drive up Mill Mountain - or hike the Mill Mountain Greenway to get there. You will be able to take in a view of the entire city!
From Mill Mountain, hop onto the Blue Ridge Parkway to enjoy the changing of the seasons. Or, visit the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests for 1.8 million acres of recreational opportunities.
In neighboring Salem, family fun is given top priority. Every year, thousands come to enjoy the small town friendliness and warm-weather events that liven up the community. From outdoor recreation to indoor enjoyment, Salem is guaranteed to please every taste.
